Shroud Gaming Chair Update 2021: The Herman Miller Embody

As of late 2020, Shroud uses the Herman Miller Embody chair in partnership with Logitech after switching from the Herman Miller Aeron chair. Since Shroud is sponsored by Logitech and they recently announced their partnership with Herman Miller, it makes sense that they would provide Shroud the updated Logitech version of the Herman Miller Embody.

In the image below, you can see Shroud with the new Herman Miller Embody chair with his old Herman Miller Aeron chair in the background.

Note that it is fairly common for professional gamers to switch out their gaming chairs every few months to a year to promote newer models provided to them by their sponsors. At Chair Insights, we’ll continue to do our best to keep you updated with the latest information.

Who Is Shroud? Some Background Info

Shroud Mixer Stream

If you don’t know who Shroud us, allow me to introduce you to this epic, influential gamer. Born on June 2nd, 1994, Michael Grzesiek, more commonly known as Shroud, is a professional gamer and streamer. He’s from Mississauga, Ontario, Canada.

Shroud gained popularity for his Counter-Strike: Global Offensive gameplay, as that’s the game he became a pro in. He’s only expanded his library since hitting it big. Some of the other classic titles Shroud has played are Rainbow Six Siege and Call of Duty Black Ops 4: Blackout.

These days, you can catch Shroud streaming such titles as Fortnite Battle Royale, Escape from Tarkov, World of Warcraft Classic, Battalion 1944, Minecraft, and Apex Legends.

At the beginning of his gaming career, Shroud was a part of the Manajum and Exertus E-Sports Entertainment Association Leagues or ESEAs. CompLexity Gaming picked him up, and the company later became Cloud9 in 2014.

Shroud was a valuable part of the Cloud9 team, helping them land second at ESL One Cologne 2017. The year prior, at ESL Pro League Season 4, the Cloud9 team had won first place thanks to Shroud’s involvement.

He stayed with Cloud9 until 2018 when Shroud decided to move away from Counter-Strike. These days, Shroud works full-time as a gamer and streamer. Since getting started, he’s played more than 6,000 hours, giving his viewers plenty of awesome footage to watch.

Always on the cutting edge, Shroud in 2019 decided to make the jump to Mixer from Twitch. If you’re not familiar, Mixer is a streaming platform owned by Microsoft.

Before he left it, Shroud had 7.04 million Twitch followers and 366 million views. On his YouTube, Shroud has amassed 5.61 million subscribers and 547 million views.

Shroud’s Gaming Chair Features and Benefits

Now that you’re familiar with Shroud, let’s talk more about his gaming chair! A man like Shroud who streams for hours upon hours at a time has to feel comfy. That’s why he uses the Herman Miller Aeron chair.

This is a chair with its own rich history. Bill Strumpf and Don Chadwick created the design for the Aeron chair back in 1992. It’s such a beloved seat that it’s in the Museum of Modern Art. Also, back in 2010, the Aeron was declared “America’s best-selling chair.”

Its name ties to aeronautics, aeration, and Aeron, a Celtic god. The materials of the Aeron have not changed much in the decades since its invention. The Pellicle fabric is durable but sheer. Even better is that almost the entire chair, up to 94 percent, can be recycled.

I want to take a deep dive into all the many features that make the Aeron a chair fit for a gaming king like Shroud.

Color Variety

The Aeron can look like a totally different chair depending on the color. The Mineral hue is lighter and brightens any gaming room. If you like darker colors, Graphite is a pure black that should match your tastes.

Multiple Sizes

The Aeron has three sizes meant for users with different body types. This makes the Aeron available to more people, as any good chair should be.

Cross-Performance Design

The cross-performance features Herman Miller includes in this chair allow you to set your posture any way you need it throughout the day. The Aeron is also adaptable for a variety of activities, from gaming to working and nearly anything in between that you need to be seated for.

Easy Shifting and Adjustments

Lean way back in the Aeron with its full recline. It can also move upright seamlessly and quietly. Herman Miller has since shifted the frame angle forward by 1.8 degrees. This allows you to achieve different postures and sit more comfortably when you’re upright.

The ergonomic support of the 8Z Pellicle and PostureFit SL cradle the skeletal system whether you’re sitting, moving the chair, or reclining.

Less Sweat Buildup

Besides its superior ergonomics, the 8Z Pellicle material also combats humidity as water vapor, body heat, and air flow right through. This is better than mesh, as Pellicle is the unique material that has made the Aeron a best-seller.

More Latitudinal Zones

That 8Z Pellicle material has yet another benefit: latitudinal zones! With eight in all, you can feel the difference in comfort the moment you take a seat. Each latitudinal zone has its own tension that makes sitting in the Aeron a joy.

Where Can You Buy Shroud’s Chair?

After reading about the features above, you’re sold! You’d love to get your hands on the chair Shroud uses, but where can you buy it? Here are some retailers to shop.

Herman Miller

As the manufacturer of the Aeron chair, you can of course expect to buy it on Herman Miller’s website. Here’s a shopping link for your convenience, although that link I provided in the last section works too.

Amazon

The retail giant Amazon also sells the Aeron chair. This link is for a medium or Size B chair. The Aeron on Amazon only comes in the black or Graphite. All the other features are present, and you can even shop a used Aeron chair if that’s more to your liking.

Madison Seating

Madison Seating is a resource for buying furniture for the bedroom, dining room, and living room. You can also shop sofas, chairs, and Herman Miller products specifically. All sizes and styles of the Aeron are available here.

Office Designs

Office furniture resource Office Designs also stocks the beloved Aeron. Any and all colors the Aeron comes in are selectable, and you can shop all three chair sizes, too. Choose from other features as well, among them casters, lumbar support, arm pad material, arm adjustability, and seat adjustability.

SmartFurniture

If you’re still looking for a website to buy your Herman Miller Aeron, try SmartFurniture. They’re an authorized retailer of Herman Miller chairs. You also get the same range of customization option as covered above, which is pretty cool!

Design Within Reach

Design Within Reach or DWR is yet another resource for picking up your Aeron chair. With all sizes, colors, and features available, you can order your Aeron chair your way, just like Shroud would want.

How Much Does Shroud’s Chair Cost?

Shroud is a huge gamer who brings in the big money. You’re sure he can spend however much he wants for his gaming chair, but how much does the Aeron cost exactly?

According to the price on Herman Miller’s website, the chair is $995 before shipping. Even if you were to buy the smallest chair, a Size A, the price doesn’t change.

That said, this is the base price only. Customizing the features will add more to your bill. Here’s what you need to know.

Casters

The base casters included with the Aeron are 2.5-inch carpet casters. If you stick with those, there’s no extra cost. However, by adding casters with Hard Floor or Carpet Roll-Away Resistance, you’re adding $50 to your total cost. These have Quiet Roll Technology that makes the casters whisper-quiet.

Arm Pads

Standard fabric arm pads come at no extra charge, but leather ones are $100 more.

Arms

If you don’t feel the need to adjust your armrests on your gaming chair, then you can select stationary arms. For arms with a full range of adjustable features, it’s $205 extra. If you only need arms that can raise higher or lower, that’s $74.

Tilt

Standard tilt features won’t contribute to the Aeron chair’s price, but the same cannot be said if you want the seat angle and tilt limiter. They cost $100.

Back Support

You can’t go without plush back support, which means spending more. You only get basic back support for free. For $95, you can opt for the Adjustable PostureFit SL. An extra $75 will net you adjustable lumbar support.

Style

While the size of the chair doesn’t make it more expensive, the style can. The Graphite base with a Graphite frame is $995, but the polished aluminum base with mineral frame increases the price to $1,265. The satin aluminum base with the mineral frame is only $1,215. The polished aluminum base with the graphite frame sets you back $1,145.

Should You Buy Shroud’s Chair?

Okay, now you’re admittedly on the fence. You really want to use the same chair as Shroud does. You’ll get major cred among your gaming buddies, plus it would be so cool to emulate your fave streamer. The price is what’s holding you back, though.

Should you go ahead and get Shroud’s chair? I’d say yes for the following reasons:

  • You’d have the same gaming chair as Shroud. Enough said.
  • The Aeron is one of the best-selling Herman Miller chairs, and it has decades of excellence.
  • This chair can double as a work chair if you don’t have quite as big of a streaming audience as Shroud (yet).
  • The durability and quality craftsmanship of the Aeron means you’ll have this chair for quite some time to come.

Is it more expensive than your typical gaming chair? Yes, of course. Then again, Shroud doesn’t use a typical gaming chair. As it’s the price that has you concerned, you have a few options.

You can get the basic Graphite frame and base for a chair that’s under $1,000 before tax and shipping. The Herman Miller website offers Affirm payments, which let you pay in installments of $69 a month until the chair is paid off.

You can also shop outside of the Herman Miller site. On Amazon, there are used Aeron chairs available, as I said. You’ll want to be extra diligent to make sure you get a chair that’s in good quality, but you can save money this way.

Alternatives to Shroud’s Chair

If for some reason you can’t get your hands on a Herman Miller Aeron like Shroud uses, don’t despair. I did some digging to find you three alternatives that will make you forget all about the Aeron.

Steelcase Leap Fabric Chair

The first of these is the Steelcase Leap Fabric Chair, which is available for under $900. This chair looks a lot like the Aeron at first glance. It’s ergonomically designed, such as with the LiveBack. This can alter its own shape to better accommodate your spine for better support.

A natural glide system allows you to adjust the chair easily, whether that’s gliding the seat forward or reclining. Through all these adjustments, your visual orientation doesn’t change. You won’t have to miss a second of the gaming action as you switch your seat to a comfier position, then.

Other features are hard casters, adjustable lumbar support, and arms you can adjust based on pivot depth, width, and height. The height of the whole chair has pneumatic adjustments as well. Steelcase’s Leap Fabric Chair comes in a wide variety of colors, from natural hues like black and gray to fun ones like cyan and dark blue.

I’d also recommend the Duramont Ergonomic Adjustable Office Chair. This is a great value as it costs under $400. With a weight capacity of up to 330 pounds, it’s an inclusive seat that could be just what you’re looking for.

The rollerblade caster wheels roll here, there, and everywhere without causing a commotion. A plush seat cushion feels great while the mesh back keeps you from getting sweaty and sticky during the most intense gaming sessions.

When it comes to adjustments, the Duramont chair has ‘em. You can select the tilt tension, backrest tilt, seat height, armrest distance and height, lumbar support depth and height, and the angle and height of the headrest. The Duramont Ergonomic Adjustable Office Chair comes in one color: black.

If you really want a chair like Shroud’s but you’re on a very tight budget, try the Staples. You can get this for under $200, making it very friendly on your wallet.

The mid-back style of the chair is trendy, as is its curvy body. Measuring 25.5 inches deep by 24.5 inches wide, the seat height is 37.5 inches to 41.25 inches tall depending on how you set it. A tilt lever lets you activate a slew of adjustments, including upright and reclining. You can also control tilt resistance, tilt tension, and chair rocking.

Mesh panels around the back encourage better airflow. Also, the waterfall seat edge style relieves pressure on the back so you’re nice and cozy. The plastic arms can flip up if you need more space while you sit. The Flash Furniture Mesh Ergonomic Office Chair comes in a rainbow of colors, among them white, red, neon green, blue, black, and gray.

Conclusion

If you’re a gamer yourself, you’ve surely heard of Shroud. He became one of the biggest names in the Counter-Strike community and these days is a popular streamer with millions of views.

Shroud does all his gaming in the Herman Miller Aeron chair, a costly yet refined seating option. You can pick up the same chair yourself or get a close alternative to be just like your favorite streamer!
