If you buy the chair through IKEA’s website (here’s the link for you again), it costs $229. You can also shop through Amazon if you prefer, but the chair is pricier through them. It starts at $399. 

Should You Buy TommyInnit’s Chair?

Is TommyInnit’s chair the right pick for you? If you’re still debating whether to go through with the purchase, I strongly encourage you to read these next two sections. Here, I’ll go over the pros and cons of the IKEA MARKUS chair, and in the next section, I’ll talk about some gaming and office chairs just like it.

So let’s start with the good stuff, shall we? TommyInnit’s chair is loaded with awesome features that make the MARKUS suitable for many gamers. For one, it’s an IKEA chair. IKEA is a household name, not some little-known chair brand. You may already have some IKEA furniture in your home that you really like. You know if you buy the MARKUS that you’ll likely enjoy using it as well.

The sleek look of the MARKUS is quite eye-catching, what with its leather panels at the headrest and seat as well as the mesh back. The rolled armrests are another nice touch. If you start streaming in this chair, you know you’ll definitely win some kudos among your audience.

The MARKUS isn’t just appealing, but it’s sturdy as well. It features a steel back, strong aluminum five-star base, and a wood veneer seat frame. I also have to talk about the price, which is a steal. 

All that said, I would be remiss not to mention some downsides to the IKEA MARKUS. I wish this chair had more ergonomic features. Since TommyInnit is such a young gamer, he probably doesn’t care much about back support and headrests, but he will in a few years. For the rest of us, it’s a glaring omission.

You probably won’t feel the layers of glued wood veneer thanks to the polyurethane foam, but then again, if the chair is old enough, you may. Plus, some people hate polyurethane foam since it doesn’t have the best reputation.

You’re also lacking adjustments. Yes, you can raise or lower the height of this chair, and it does tilt, but IKEA doesn’t say what the MARKUS’ tilting radius is. I couldn’t find that information on Amazon either. 

The armrests don’t move. I know, this is an office chair and not a gaming chair, so arm support may not have been the biggest priority. Even still, if you’ve used a chair with more adjustments in the past, you might find yourself missing them when sitting in the IKEA MARKUS.

I think the biggest downside is that you have to put together the MARKUS yourself. Almost no gaming and office chairs come ready to use right out of the box, but given that it’s an IKEA chair, I’d say you should expect more assembly than most chairs.

IKEA’s instructions are notoriously not very helpful, enough so that there are many memes about assembling IKEA furniture. Putting together the MARKUS could be a frustrating experience. 

Alternatives to TommyInnit’s Chair

That’s why I want to discuss a few chair alternatives, as promised. These three gaming and office chairs give the IKEA MARKUS a run for its money!

Secretlab NeueChair

The NeueChair is Secretlab’s “best ergonomic office chair” according to their website. You may agree, as the NeueChair has many of the features you’re looking for in an office and/or gaming chair. 

The PU caster wheels can roll on hard and soft floors alike. Each burly 65-millimeter caster has caps for noise reduction. The casters attach to the ACD12 aluminum alloy base. To make this chair even stronger, Secretlab includes wheelbase ribs. The chair does well at dynamic impact and static impact tests, passing with flying colors!

Concave armrests are covered in PU material with grip so your arms won’t slip off the rests. Adjustable lumbar support will cradle your natural spine curvature. The NeueChair also has a Focus Mode which activates all the ergonomics you could ask for.

To make any other adjustments, a ControlShift lever can tilt the backrest, lock the tilt, and raise the height of the chair. All adjustments happen courtesy of Class IV double-layered hydraulic pistons. 

If you like the mesh backing of the IKEA MARKUS, the NeueChair features its own brand of mesh known as NeueMesh. This triple-layered mesh combines DuPont yarn and polyester fibers for impressive comfort, durability, and breathability. 

Secretlab’s NeueChair costs $549. It may be more expensive than the MARKUS, but it has lots of the features that chair lacks. 

Staples Hyken Technical Task Chair

A close cousin of the MARKUS, the Staples Hyken Technical Task Chair is a very viable replacement. It too boasts mesh panels, and not just at the back, but the headrest is mesh as well. Why shouldn’t your head benefit from better breathability too?

You get about as many adjustments in the Hyken as you do in the IKEA MARKUS, including height adjustments, seat angle, and tilt tension with tilt locking. Unlike the MARKUS, you can set the height of the armrests in the Hyken, even doing so individually!

Herman Miller Aeron 

If you want the best of the best when it comes to mesh-backed office chairs, that’s undoubtedly the Herman Miller Aeron. I’ll just be upfront and say this chair costs $1,395, but for every cent you spend, you get premium quality. 

This famous chair was designed by Don Chadwick and Bill Stumpf in the ‘90s and has remained virtually unchanged in the decades since. Heavy-duty casters, 2.5 inches apiece, include quiet roll technology for a range of flooring. The armrests are padded with foam for your comfort.

Speaking of comfort, Herman Miller’s PostureFit SL backrest is some of the best ergonomic support you’ll find in a chair. The elastomeric suspension through the Aeron’s 8Z Pellicle material will also help your posture and pain levels. This material is tighter at the ends of the chair and loose but flexible in the center so you can lean back freely but still feel cradled.

The armrests can be adjusted for their angle, depth, and height. You can also set the seat angle support, seat tilt, and seat depth with a Harmonic 2 tilt mechanism. 

Oh, and did I mention the Aeron is ready to use right out of the box? Yes, that’s right, no assembly required! You can’t say that about the IKEA MARKUS. 

Conclusion 

Young streamer TommyInnit only plays on Twitch and YouTube in the IKEA MARKUS. This appealing, mid-priced office chair has lots of features for gamers, including a mesh backrest, smooth-rolling casters, a sturdy base, and soft, luxe upholstery.
