About Hon Office Chairs

Let’s start off by talking about the makers of the Ignition 2.0 office chair, which is Hon.

Hon is an office furniture retailer based in Iowa. Their assortment of office products includes chairs, desks, filing cabinets, tables, and prebuilt cubicles.

Among their selection of chairs, you have options such as executive and conference chairs, task chairs, stacking and nesting chairs, stools, guest chairs, and lounge chairs.

Hon Ignition 2.0 Review Highlights

Now let’s shine the spotlight on the Hon Ignition 2.0. This is the new and improved version of Hon’s original Ignition office chair. The Ignition 2.0 includes a tall back, 2D arms, lumbar support, a variety of adjustments, and mesh upholstery.

What We Liked:

  • Tilt tension and tilt lock take basic office chair adjustments to the next level.
  • The Synchro-Tilt feature allows you to adjust the angle of your Ignition 2.0 chair based on seat angle.
  • For those who need customized ergonomics, you can adjust the lumbar support feature.
  • The weight capacity is generous at 300 pounds.
  • The Ignition 2.0 chair can swivel 360 degrees.
  • Hon protects the chair under its Limited Lifetime Warranty.

What We Didn’t Like:

  • Mesh upholstery, while luxe in the Ignition 2.0 chair, is not suitable for cold-weather environments.
  • According to some users, assembling this office chair is more difficult than it seems.

Next, let’s delve into the specs and features of the Hon Ignition 2.0, beginning with its specifications.

DimensionsHeight: 44 ½ inches
Depth: 24 inches
Width: 27 inches
Seat height: 17 1/8 inches to 21 ½ inches
Seat depth: 16 ¼ inches to 19 ¼ inches
Product Weight42 pounds
MaterialMesh, resin, plastic
Weight Capacity300 pounds

Durable Five-Star Base

The five-star base of the Hon Ignition 2.0 chair is made of resin and covered with durable PVC plastic. Flanking the base are five PU-coated caster wheels for easily traveling throughout the office so you can connect with your coworkers and get some facetime rather than Facetime.

You can also swivel 360 degrees thanks to the sturdy base.

Padded Seating

I couldn’t find what kind of padding or foam Hon uses for the Ignition 2.0 office chair, but the seat features dual padded layers to prioritize your comfort. If your legs often fall asleep when you’re trying to work, leaving you with pins and needles, then a comfortable office chair seat is integral.

The cushion of the chair is covered in sandwich mesh. This type of cloth has small mesh-like holes throughout. Sandwich mesh can be knitted or woven, and it’s hard to tell which is the case for the Ignition 2.0 seat. Either way, sandwich mesh is breathable (to a degree) and comfortable.

Mesh Upholstery

The rest of the Ignition 2.0 uses ilira-stretch mesh, which is exclusive to this office chair. The ilira mesh is flexible so that whether you like to sit up straight to get your best work done or you’d prefer to lean thoughtfully back when taking breaks, the mesh will support you.

The biggest advantage of mesh office chairs is their fantastic breathability, and that’s another area where the Ignition 2.0 chair excels.

As you sit in this chair and work up a sweat, your perspiration will pass through the openings in the chair so it doesn’t get stinky. Cool air can also easily enter through the openings of the mesh.

Great Ergonomics

The Hon Ignition 2.0 is acclaimed for its ergonomics. Included with this office chair is adjustable lumbar support for your lower back. You can set the lumbar support higher up your back or right at the base of your lower back so that no matter where you need comfort, you can get it.

Plenty of Adjustments to Explore

The lumbar support is far from the only adjustable feature of this chair. The Ignition 2.0 also includes side tilt tension, which allows you to customize the recline rate. All you have to do is reach to the right side of your chair to set the tilt tension.

Synchro-Tilt works on a pivot point, allowing for a recline angle that’s a two-to-one ratio of the seat angle. Once you’ve found that epic recline angle, use tilt lock to set your Ignition 2.0 chair into place.

That’s not all! The Ignition 2.0 includes a seat glide mechanism as well that allows you to pull the seat cushion nearer to the edge of the chair or further away. You can lock the seat cushion when you set it.

You can toggle with the back height and the armrests as well. The arms are at least 2D adjustable, as you can move them towards you, away from you, and up or down.

Tall Seatback

The seatback of the Ignition 2.0, while not expressly an ergonomics feature, could be perceived that way. The seat is tall and wide to support your posture as you go about your day, including those moments of relaxation (for a few minutes!) and working hard.

Hon Ignition 2.0 Review: Our Insights

Now that you’re familiar with the features of the Hon Ignition 2.0, I want to take this section and the next to delve into this chair more deeply, beginning with my insights on the chair.

Build Quality

The build quality of the Hon Ignition 2.0 is great. This wasn’t Hon’s first rodeo considering that the Ignition 2.0 followed the original Ignition. This time around, Hon took everything that was great about that beloved office chair and improved upon it.

The Ignition 2.0 features a PVC and resin skeleton with caster wheels, plush seating, and mesh upholstery. The arms are flexible, the backrest is tall…there’s not much that could be improved upon its build quality except maybe a headrest. Even then, the tall backrest negates the need for a headrest.

Although it would have been nice to know more about the ingredients Hon uses to put together each Ignition 2.0 chair (like the padding material), I can still confidently say the Ignition 2.0 is a high-quality chair.

Ergonomics

Customizable ergonomics are best, as this way, you have more options than a one-size-fits-all solution. That’s why the ergonomics of the Ignition 2.0 are exemplary. You can set the lower-back lumbar support feature your way for less tension or more.

Although that’s the only feature that’s expressly marketed as being ergonomically driven, the tall backrest is its own form of ergonomics, as I said before.

Adjustability

Compared to other rather stationary office chairs, the Ignition 2.0 has lots of adjustments, so let’s recap them here.

  • Height adjustment: Raise or lower the back height of the Ignition 2.0 so it suits your height when you sit.
  • Backrest adjustments: I touched on the lumbar backrest adjustments in the paragraphs above, but the Ignition 2.0 does indeed have ‘em, and in spades.
  • Armrests: The armrests of this Hon office chair are flexible, but not as much as some of the brand’s competitors. You can raise and lower the arms, which is standard. You can also shift the arms towards or away from you, but that’s it. I wouldn’t even call the arms 3D.
  • Seat pan depth adjustment: Not many office chairs give you the freedom to pull your seat depth towards the edge of the chair or away, but the Ignition 2.0 has a control for adjusting your seat.

Comfort (Seat, Back, and Arms)

When spending eight or more hours per day five days a week in an office chair, it must be comfortable. The Hon Ignition 2.0 is loaded with features that prioritize your comfort.

Starting with the seat, there’s the above-mentioned seat pan depth adjustment for setting your seat angle just the way you like it. The seat glides smoothly with this adjustment so you can shift it while still sitting down.

The dual layers of padding that comprise the seat of the Ignition 2.0 are for your comfort, as is the sandwich mesh. Without more information on the type of padding used, it’s hard to say whether it’s firm or dense enough to provide you with hours of support.

The tall backrest is designed to keep your posture secure as you work. If you suffer from lower back pain, the adjustable lumbar support will provide the level of tension you need to work with fewer aches and pains.

The arms of the Ignition 2.0 look PU-padded, and you can move them out of the way if you’d rather they not be there. You can also lower the armrest height so the arms are not distracting you.

Value

The Hon Ignition 2.0 retails for $335. In the world of office chairs, where the average price is around $500 for a quality chair, the Ignition 2.0 is quite inexpensive. It’s not so cheap though that you’re wondering what’s wrong with it right out of the box. It’s a great value for what you’re paying.

The Ignition 2.0 does not come pre-assembled. That said, if you’re willing to spend $50 extra, you can request that Amazon put together the chair for you and send it to you.

Warranty

Hon protects the Ignition 2.0 office chair as part of its Limited Lifetime Warranty. According to Hon’s warranty page on their website, the warranty covers any product made after January 1st, 2011. That includes components, materials, and product lines from Hon.

Some parts are under warranty for only five years, others for 10 years, and more still for 12 years. The five-year warranty protects the following parts:

  • Pivoting arms and locking mechanisms for Soothe Patient recliners
  • Directional desktop sit-to-stands
  • Electric height-adjustable table bases
  • LED task lights

The 10-year warranty encompasses these components:

  • Signal seating upholstery
  • Soothe Patient recliner mechanism

  • Veneer surfaces
  • Laminate surfaces
  • Accessories
  • Wood seating
  • Pneumatic cylinders
  • Seating controls
  • ilira-stretch mesh
  • Electrical components outside of ballasts and lamps

Based on that information, most of your Ignition 2.0 chair parts should be protected by the Limited Lifetime Warranty for up to 12 years.

That said, Hon states that in certain instances, no parts of their products are covered under warranty. Here are the exceptions:

  • External contaminant dye transfers
  • Cleaning chemical damage
  • Chairs or goods you rented
  • Improperly installed products
  • Regular wear and tear
  • Adding your own materials

Return Policy

Maybe you change your mind about the Hon Ignition 2.0. I couldn’t find much information about Hon’s return policy; they don’t mention it anywhere on their website. It does appear that if you want to send your Ignition 2.0 office chair or any other Hon product back to Hon headquarters that you’d have to pay for it.

Should the Hon Ignition 2.0 be your next office chair? There are lot of upsides to this chair and a few downsides as well. Let’s go over both so you can decide if you’ll buy the Ignition 2.0.

Starting with the good stuff, the Ignition 2.0 is a mid-priced office chair that doesn’t cut corners to reduce the price. It has a range of adjustments that you’d find in more expensive office and gaming chairs, including Synchro-Tilt, tilt locking, and a seat glide mechanism for sliding your seat forward or backward.

The lumbar adjustment feature is great, as is the tall backrest to support you from head to waist. The double-layered seat is comfortable, the mesh upholstery is pliable and soft, and the resin base is built to last.

The armrests could be better. These days, 3D armrests are becoming the norm for office chairs, and the Ignition 2.0 doesn’t quite have 3D arms. They’re more 2D since you can’t rotate them on their axis.

I’ll say again that I wish I knew more about the seat foam fabric, as there’s definitely a difference between cheap foam and high-density firm foam.

The other issue is the mesh upholstery. Mesh is awesome if you’re working in a high-pressure environment. For those who live in warm climes, you’ll also appreciate the breeziness of mesh. In the winter though, when you’re shivering, you can see the issue with mesh.

In climates where the weather is predominantly cold, the extra airflow that mesh affords can make working uncomfortable. That’s a downside of all mesh chairs, not exclusively the Ignition 2.0, but I had to mention it, nonetheless.

None of those cons outweigh the pros of the Ignition 2.0, especially if you have a low budget for an office chair. You should be pleased with the value for your money.

Hon Ignition 2.0 Alternatives

As I always do, I want to take this section to show you some of the Ignition 2.0 chair’s competitors. You might like one of these chairs better, after all! I’ll compare the Ignition 2.0 to the Hon Exposure, the Steelcase Series 1, and the Duramont.

Yes, this is a Hon battle, but there can only be one winner, so which will it be?

The Hon Exposure is another mesh office chair and task chair. It features adjustable lumbar support for your entire back, not just your lower back. You can customize your posture and your level of tension using the lumbar support feature.

The arms adjust by width and height, but they’re still not 3D. The Exposure features tilt tension and locking as well as Synchro-Tilt. You can swivel fully too.

The Exposure has a squarer shape with a smaller back than the Ignition 2.0. This limits your back support, but then again, the Exposure has better ergonomic support than the Ignition 2.0. It’s lower-cost too!

Hon Ignition 2.0 vs. Steelcase Series 1

Steelcase Series 1
$498.00

The Steelcase Series 1 gives you the build quality and comfort that you would expect from a Steelcase office chair at a fraction of the price.

The Steelcase Series 1 is a striking office chair available in colors like Concord (purple), Wasabi (neon green), Tangerine (bright orange), and Blue Jay (teal blue) as well as standard colors like Licorice (black), Nickel (light gray), and Malt (tan).

The seat cushion of the Series 1 office chair features a proprietary design with air pockets for lessening pressure and conforming to your body. The air pockets deliver customized comfort for hours.

The armrests are 4D rather than 2D as with the Ignition 2.0. On the note of ergonomics, the Steelcase Series 1 includes the LiveBack flexor system for optimal lumbar support. The flexor system does more than adjust back comfort. This feature can also flex and move with your back to provide continuous spinal support.

The Steelcase Series 1 costs $436, so it’s moderately more expensive than the Hon Ignition 2.0 yet has more advanced lumbar support.

Hon Ignition 2.0 vs. Duramont Ergonomic Office Chair

Duramont Ergonomic Office Chair

The Duramont Ergonomic Office Chair is the on the best values in terms of price vs performance on the market offering excellent build quality, adjustability and comfort.

Last but certainly not least is the Duramont ergonomic office chair, which is yet a third mesh office chair.

The Duramont chair can support users weighing up to 330 pounds. It boasts adjustable lumbar support features that can move down, up, and in and out. That’s quite intuitive! When combined with backrest tilt and recline, you can support your spine and your posture in this ergonomic office chair.

The mesh upholstery throughout keeps things breathable all day. A plush headrest, which is also covered in mesh, gives you a place to comfortably lean back when you need a break from work.

The high-quality adjustment mechanisms included with the Duramont chair allow you to customize more than the lumbar support and backrest tilt, but also the tilt tension, seat height, headrest angle, headrest height, and more. For instance, you can adjust the armrests by their distance from your chair and their height.

The Duramont and Ignition 2.0 are priced about the same, which gives you a tough choice to mull over.

The Bottom Line

The Hon Ignition 2.0 is the upgraded version of the original Ignition office chair. This mesh office chair features a taller backrest, adjustable lumbar support, rolling caster wheels, 360 degrees of swivel, and Synchro-Tilt.

It’s a great chair for the money, but if you want to try other Hon chairs such as the Exposure or maybe chairs from brands such as Duramont or Steelcase, those are fantastic options as well!
