As far back comfort, it’s ideal to have a lumbar pillow that can be adjusted by height. This supports the lumbar curve, which keeps your posture intact so that you can remain upright. Slouching forward or slumping in your seat will lead to back pain. A good recline function also helps since it takes the pressure off of the back as well. 

The best armrest is highly adjustable so that your arms are perfectly positioned where it’s parallel to your desk. In the case of console gaming, since there isn’t a desk, the armrest should be well-padded to provide some pressure relief to your elbows and forearms. 

Weight Capacity

Compact gaming chairs tend to have a weight capacity between 200 to 250 pounds. If you’re someone who weighs about this much, it’s important to look at higher-weight capacity chairs. You want to avoid chairs that reach near your weight. Ideally, you shouldn’t reach about 90% of a chair’s weight capacity. Sitting on a chair that doesn’t support your weight could cause the chair to deteriorate faster and lead to potential injuries. 

Instead, look for chairs that have higher weight capacities. With budget gaming chairs, you’ll find some chairs to have a weight capacity of 300 or even 350 pounds. Often, chairs with higher weight capacity feel more sturdy, stable, and have a better build quality. That’s because manufacturers will use higher-quality components. 

Design

Most gamers choose racing-style chairs because of their flashy and bold design. Fortunately, manufacturers often offer many color options to choose from. The racing-style chair comes with stripes down the sides of the chairs. Find a chair that matches your gaming setup or one that best suits your preferences. 

In addition to the racing design, gaming chairs will vary in the seat pan design. Traditionally, gaming chairs offer a bucket seat design. They were inspired by the inside of a sports car. While they look cool, they restrict your movement and keep you at the center of the seat. 

Instead, look for a pebble seat design or flat seat pan. They give you more space to operate and freely move around. Moving around can help increase circulation, making it more comfortable to sit for longer periods. 

Price

Price will be a consideration for most consumers. It’s important to consider what you’re getting for the price you’re paying for. Many affordable gaming chairs still offer good adjustable options along with unique features. It comes down to what your primary priorities are when you’re in the market for gaming chairs. 

For example, if comfort is what you’re after, then look for budget chairs like the Recliner or Pedestal chairs. They are much more spacious and offer lots of padding. Think about the build quality as well. Even if one chair costs less, it might not be worth it if you suspect the build quality to be poor. It’s best to work within your budget and the features you’re looking for to find the perfect match for your needs.

How to Clean a PU Leather Gaming Chair

Did you find your gaming chair for a steal at under $300? More than likely, the chair is made of polyurethane leather or PU leather. 

PU leather has the added benefits of looking and feeling like leather but without the hefty price tag that a real leather gaming chair has. The material lacks durability though and will eventually peel and crack.

That being said, how well you care for a PU leather gaming chair can be the difference between the upholstery cracking in two months or two years. 

Here is how I recommend you clean your PU leather gaming chair. 

Step 1: Remove Surface-Level Dirt and Debris

From dust to dirt and crumbs, debris can accumulate on your gaming chair if you use it for everything from working to gaming and lounging. 

If you’re not careful, you can easily grind debris into the PU leather, where it can create unsightly stains. 

Before that happens, be sure to make it a regular habit (at least once a week if not more frequent) to sweep away any surface-level debris. You can use your hand to do this, sending the dirt and crumbs into a wastebin. 

For a more thorough job, I’d recommend using a handheld vacuum cleaner. Turn the vacuum on and run it over the entire seat to suck up even those small dirt particles that you might not have seen. 

Step 2: Clean the Chair with Soap and Water

PU leather, even though it’s not the real deal, is like authentic leather in that you shouldn’t get it too wet. 

Even if your PU leather chair is waterproof or water-resistant (which many gaming chairs are to combat sweat), you still don’t want to soak the chair unless you have to.

I’d recommend spot-cleaning your chair if you can. That said, if your gaming chair is truly worse for wear and needs cleaning from top to bottom, then so be it. Keep reading for instructions. 

Get into the habit of using distilled water to clean leather products. Sure, this is recommended more for real leather gaming chairs than faux leather. Even still, by avoiding the minerals in tap water, your PU leather chair will look better and could last longer.

You only need a couple of drops of dish detergent or dish soap. The milder the soap, the better. The soap you select shouldn’t have an odor nor a color, as both could be imparted to your PU leather gaming chair.

Fill a small basin with the water and soap and mix until they’re sudsy. You can use a soft microfiber cloth to dip into the basin and then scour at the stain. 

Before you target the spot on your PU chair, you want to test how the faux leather will react to the dish soap and water. Pick a hidden spot and clean it. 

More than likely, your chair will be fine. You’ll want to know that before you clean an obvious area like the seat or back of your chair, though. 

Sometimes, dish detergent isn’t strong enough for certain types of stains. For example, if you spilled ink on your gaming chair, you’ll need rubbing alcohol and a cotton swab to fix the issue. Baby wipes can also help.

If not spot-cleaning, then take the microfiber cloth, wet it in the soap and water, and wring it out. You want to keep your chair as dry as you can when you clean it. 

Wipe the PU leather gaming chair from top to bottom, including the corners of the seat that you don’t reach very often as well as the underside of the seat and the back of the chair.

Feel free to keep cleaning the arms, the base of the chair, and the wheels. 

Step 3: Remove Any Lingering Soap Residue

Your PU gaming chair looks fantastic if you do say so yourself. However, it’s still a bit sudsy, and you know that won’t fly.

Indeed, it won’t. You’ll need another microfiber cloth, this one clean and dry. Dip it in distilled water and wring it out so the cloth isn’t soaking.

Then go over the entirety of your gaming chair that you cleaned with soap. When you don’t see any more soap bubbles or streaks of white, your PU leather chair is officially clean. 

Step 4: Fully Dry the Chair 

Remember, leather and water don’t get along, even PU leather. 

There’s no need to plug in your hair dryer or anything like that to dry the chair. Instead, you’ll need yet another microfiber cloth. This one should be clean and dry as well.

Rub the cloth all over the chair, drying every last square inch of the chair you cleaned. Mold and mildew can develop on PU leather as these fungi can on real leather. 

In that case, you’d have to use a specialty cleaner or throw your chair away, so make sure it’s very dry before you consider it clean.  

How to Clean a Leather Gaming Chair

You decided when you bought a gaming chair that you wanted to splurge and get the real deal. You spent several hundred dollars, maybe even a thousand dollars or more, but yours is a bonafide leather gaming chair.

How you maintain your chair won’t be all that disparate from the steps above, but the differences are more profound. 

For example, you don’t only have to use soap and water to clean a leather chair, and I’d recommend a leather conditioner to keep your gaming chair looking spiffy.

Let’s go over the steps now. 

Step 1: Remove Surface Debris

It’d be even more detrimental to accidentally grind dirt or crumbs into a real leather chair than it would be a PU chair. Prevent that heartbreaking outcome by sweeping away debris. 

Once again, I would recommend doing this several times per week or at least once weekly depending on how often you use your gaming chair as well as how you use it (do you snack in the chair or is it strictly for sitting and gaming?).

A handheld vacuum cleaner is again handy for cleaning your leather gaming chair and will be more thorough than if you were to remove the crumbs by hand. The vacuum can get into those tight crevices!

Step 2: Clean the Leather Chair

Now that your leather gaming chair is free of dirt and crumbs, it’s time to clean the rest of the upholstery.

If your expensive new chair has a stain or two, don’t worry, as I’ll tell you how to treat stains a little later in this section.

For now, let’s talk about general cleaning. If yours is darker leather or anything but white leather, you have two cleaning options. 

One option is to combine water and mild dish soap as you did when cleaning a PU leather gaming chair above. Once again, you should only use dish soap that is color and fragrance-free.

Your other option is to clean your leather gaming chair with a combination of water and vinegar, using the same amount of one as the other. 

For both cleaning methods, you’ll need a dry microfiber cloth, so be sure to have several cloths handy. 

To clean your leather office chair using dish soap and water, take the cloth, dip it into the mixture, and wring the cloth so it’s not dripping wet. Then wipe down the entirety of the chair from top to bottom. 

If you’re using vinegar and water, stir the two together and moisten a microfiber cloth in the mixture. 

This time, rub the cloth in circles. This will cause any hidden dirt that’s been trapped within the fibers of the leather to come to the surface. 

What if your gaming chair is made of specialty white leather? You can clean the leather with a mixture of vinegar and oil.

Use ¼ cup of vinegar and half a cup of oil, transferring the fluid into a spray bottle. Mist the upholstery and allow the mixture to work for at least five minutes.

Step 3: Remove Any Soap Residue

Your leather gaming chair looks shiny and clean, but it’s still covered in either soap or vinegar and oil. You’ll have to clean the residue, and the way to do that is with a damp microfiber cloth.

Just as you did when cleaning a PU leather gaming chair, dip a microfiber cloth in water, wring it out, and then wipe down your whole chair. 

Take special care not to soak the leather, as you don’t want to accidentally ruin your chair!

Step 4: Dry the Chair

With your leather gaming chair clean, it’s time to dry it. As you did in the last section, you can use a soft, clean microfiber cloth for the job. 

Step 5: Condition the Leather 

Make that leather shine with a nice application of leather conditioner.

You can always make your own conditioner, but since you splurged on a leather gaming chair, you might as well splurge on a commercial leather conditioner too.  

Make sure to follow the usage instructions to the letter. Too much leather conditioner can make your chair soggy and slippery, not sleek and shiny like you wanted! 

Step 6: Treat Stains

After cleaning your leather gaming chair and conditioning it, it’s time to treat any stains that may have appeared on your upscale upholstery. 

Toothpaste works on white leather gaming chairs, especially if the chair has scuffs or other noticeable discoloration. You should use gel-based toothpaste with a mild (or no) fragrance. 

Moisten the area a bit and apply a dollop of toothpaste over the stain or discoloration. With a clean, soft toothbrush, rub at the scuff or discoloration until it’s gone.

What if ink has discolored your brand-new leather gaming chair? The same solution as cleaning ink from PU leather applies. 

As you’ll recall, you should try rubbing alcohol and a cotton swab. If that doesn’t do it, then you can apply oil-free, non-gel cuticle remover. 

You want to use a lot of the stuff, covering the stain generously with cuticle remover. Then, leave it on the stain overnight and clean any residue in the morning using a damp microfiber cloth.

If an oil stain has rendered your leather gaming chair unappealing, take some cornstarch or baking soda and apply it directly. Allow at least a few hours to elapse, but ideally, overnight is better. 

During that time, the cornstarch or baking soda absorbs the oil that’s saturated into your chair.

What about those weird, seemingly unexplainable dark stains? Remove those from leather with cream of tartar (one part) and lemon juice (one part). Make a paste, rub it on the spots, and allow the paste to do its thing for 10 minutes. 

Those dark stains should be gone! Repeat if the stains are still noticeable until you’re pleased. 

How to Clean a Mesh Gaming Chair

Gaming chairs and mesh go together like peanut butter and jelly because playing games can be a sweaty business. Having a chair that allows sweat a place to exit and encourages natural airflow is going to make for a less stinky chair.

Cleaning mesh isn’t a whole different ballgame than maintaining a gaming chair made of real or PU leather. Here are the steps to follow.

Step 1: Remove Debris with a Handheld Vacuum

Begin by removing crumbs, dirt, and other debris that has settled on your chair after several long hours of beating the latest big boss.

A handheld vacuum cleaner is the handiest tool for the job. Be sure to get both sides of the mesh so that any particles trapped within the material can dislodge for a cleaner chair.

Step 2: Clean the Chair with Soap and Water

I hope you have some dish soap handy, as you’re going to need it. As I’ve recommended this entire time, you should use mild dish soap without a fragrance or a color. 

Fill a basin with water and add up to two squirts of the dish soap. That ought to do it. Then mix until the water gets nice and sudsy.

Dip a clean microfiber cloth into the mixture, wring out the excess water, and begin wiping down your chair.

You don’t want to soak mesh too much if you can help it just because it will take your chair longer to dry. You might have to plug in a hair dryer rather than use a dry microfiber cloth for the job, so the entire process ends up taking you longer.

You’re allowed to clean more than just the mesh upholstery with the soap and water mixture, but the plastic and metal components as well. 

Step 3: Use a Cotton Swab for Those Hard-to-Reach Places

The one downside to cleaning a mesh gaming chair is that reaching between the holes of the mesh can be a real pain. 

Your microfiber cloth alone might not be able to do it, so I would recommend a pack of cotton swabs, as you’re going to need plenty.

One by one, dip the swabs into the water and soap mixture to get all the spaces between the mesh looking as good as new again. 

This is going to be a time-consuming process, but it’s one you have to commit to if you want your gaming chair to be truly clean. 

Step 4: Dry the Mesh Chair

Next, it’s time to dry your chair. To get into all those teensy-weensy mesh openings dry, don’t try to use a microfiber cloth. I’d recommend a can of compressed air instead. 

How to Clean a Fabric Gaming Chair

You love a nice, comfortable seat, so you naturally gravitated towards a fabric gaming chair. You’re quite pleased with your selection, as sitting in the chair is indeed as plush and lovely as you had been hoping for.

Since fabric isn’t the most breathable material, you’re going to want to get into a regular habit of cleaning your gaming chair, especially if you do a lot of high-intensity streaming in the chair. 

How you clean an upholstered gaming chair doesn’t differ so much whether it’s polyester or knitted fabric. Here’s how you do it.

Step 1: Remove Surface Debris and Dust

That’s right, just as you’ve done for any other gaming chair material, the first part of cleaning your fabric chair is vacuuming it with a handheld vacuum cleaner. 

The vacuum will pull up any dirt, dust, and crumbs. It’s very easy to grind these messes into upholstered material, and the stains that can be left behind are much more damning compared to some of the other gaming chair materials I’ve talked about. 

Step 2: Clean the Chair with Soap and Water

The tried and true combo of water and dish soap once again comes to the rescue here. 

The ratio of water to soap is a bit different when cleaning upholstery. You want one part dish soap for every 16 parts water. 

Use distilled water as you have this entire time and keep the temperature lukewarm as well. You already know by now that I’m going to tell you that colorless, fragrance-free dish soap is best.

If you want to use a microfiber cloth and clean your fabric chair that way, you can. I’d recommend a spray bottle more, as you won’t get your chair too soaking wet when you clean it. 

Step 3: Remove Soap Residue from the Chair

If you weren’t already using a microfiber cloth before, you’ll need one now. It should be clean and dry, but you’ll moisten it with distilled water. Wring the excess water out and then wipe down the chair to remove any lingering dish soap residue. 

Step 4: Dry Your Chair

While you can always let your upholstered gaming chair air-dry, I’d recommend manually drying it with a microfiber cloth. This way, you’re not inviting any mold or mildew to start a party on your gaming chair!

Why Are Gaming Chairs Expensive? Major Factors Explained

Most gaming chairs worth their salt start at $200 and can cost upwards of $500 and more. Of course, you can still get your hands on a gaming chair for $75, but most chairs have bigger price tags.

Per the intro, let’s expound further on why gaming chairs have gotten so costly. 

Brand Reputation

The first factor is a big one, and it’s brand reputation.

I’m sure I don’t have to tell you this, as you’re a consumer too, but the brand is a huge determining factor in people’s purchasing decisions. 

A 2014 report from online marketing research firm AYTM found that when it comes to grocery shopping, 70 percent of consumers believe that a brand name sometimes indicates higher quality.

If you see a pair of Nike shoes versus a pair of off-brand shoes, which will inspire more trust that you’re going to get a high-quality product? That’s right, it’s the Nikes.

That’s a belief that’s hard to shake. When you consider that branded products tend to cost more than off-brands (Nike versus that brand of shoes you’ve never heard of), this can further drive the impression that a costlier item must be higher-quality.

Now, is that always true? No. However, people stick to what they know, and believing that the branded item is better quality means that consumers are usually willing to spend more money. 

Thus, if you look at a very well-established gaming chair brand such as Secretlab, consumers take no umbrage with shelling out $700+ for this company’s chairs.

Compare that to a chair brand like SMAX. Their gaming chair costs close to $300.

Since SMAX isn’t a very well-known brand, consumers might not want to spend that much money on the chair. They don’t know what they’re going to get, so spending the $300 could be a gamble.

(FYI, the SMAX chair we linked you to is rated quite favorably, and I just used it for the sake of example.) 

Materials and Build Quality

Do you want premium materials in your gaming chair that will last for years to come? Do you want a chair that looks great when it’s assembled with no misaligned areas or visible seams? 

If you answered yes to these questions, then you have to know that the high build quality of the chair is going to cost you.

Buying a chair with a cheap build quality will cost you too, but in a different way. 

When you find a gaming chair for just shy of $100 or slightly over that mark, you can feel at first that you scored a great deal. 

Then, after a few weeks or months of using the chair, its true colors come out. 

The seams begin loosening, and you’re constantly cutting off long strings. The fabric might have torn, especially in high-impact areas like the seat and the back. The thin, cheap foam could have compressed and will not bounce back. 

In short, all sorts of things are wrong with this chair. 

It wasn’t made very well, and now you’re realizing it. You’ll end up needing a new gaming chair in six months or under. 

Spending under $100 on a gaming chair seemed like a great bargain until you have to replace your chair at least twice a year.

Higher-end and thus more expensive gaming chairs don’t suffer from the same sort of quality defects.

Rather than use cheap fabric (often PU leather), a gaming chair will feature real leather or durable faux leather.

For example, Secretlab’s NEO hybrid leatherette isn’t real leather, but you would never know that by looking at and using the Titan chair that’s equipped with the leatherette.

Liquid-resistant and 12 times more durable than regular PU leather, the NEO hybrid leatherette costs hundreds of dollars less than equipping your Secretlab gaming chair with real leather. It will hold up, and it adds to the look of your chair.

More expensive gaming chairs will feature plush seat cushions made of high-density foam, sometimes even cold-cure foam. Like the kind of memory foam in your mattress, the foam in a good gaming chair will restore its shape after you get up.

The foam lasts longer, supporting and cradling your lower half to keep you free of pain as you play or even work for hours. 

Can you sometimes find a low-priced or mid-priced gaming chair that has these kinds of covetable features? Yes, but these chairs are admittedly few and far between.

The less money that a chair retails for, the less money the manufacturer can expend on producing it. If they spend more money to make the chair than they earn, then they’re operating at a loss. No company can do that and survive for long.

Thus, you’ll have to expect that in almost every instance, you must be willing to spend more money for inimitable build quality. 

Manufacturing Location

Another factor to keep in mind when assessing the price of a gaming chair is where the chair is produced.

If the manufacturer is located in your country of origin, then you don’t have to pay as much money for shipping and handling. 

For those shoppers who purchase a chair from a manufacturing plant halfway around the world, expect to see even higher prices than the norm. 

Warranty

Does your gaming chair come with a warranty?

Many do to sweeten the pot and entice consumers who were on the fence to make a purchasing decision.

After all, it’s always nice to know that if one of the parts fails or if something happens to your chair that isn’t basic wear and tear from everyday use that you wouldn’t have to pay for the repair or replacement part yourself.

The warranty would cover it.

Further, when you consider that most gaming chair warranties are multi-year deals, that makes passing on the warranty even harder to do.

Most people get so caught up in the assurances of free repairs that they don’t stop to think about where the money for the warranty comes from.

As I talked about in my post on why office chairs are so expensive, gaming chair warranties are factored into the overall price of your chair.

The longer and more comprehensive the warranty is, the more money you’ll usually end up spending on your gaming chair. 

This is one of those things where you don’t even get a choice in the matter. A warranty is bundled into your gaming chair, with no option to remove it. 

If you contacted the manufacturer and tried to ask about foregoing the warranty, you would likely be told that’s not possible. 

You’re stuck paying that extra money, but at least it benefits you in both the short-term and usually the long-term as well.  

Features

These days, gaming chairs come fully equipped with all the features you need to sit down, kick back, and get ready to play for hours.

Some gaming chairs feature retractable footrests. If you want to put your feet up in between rounds or when talking to your audience on stream, you can. 

Then, the footrest pushes down seamlessly and tucks under the chair so it’s not in the way. It’s the ultimate convenience feature. 

Lots of gaming chairs feature cupholders and/or small storage pouches for holding snacks, charging cables, your smartphone, or a spare controller. These are also convenience features. 

You can keep everything you need close at hand so you don’t have to disrupt the stream and take yourself out of the game by getting up and going to the fridge.

Some gaming chairs even have coursing LED lights and built-in speakers for augmenting the audio experience. Gaming will feel more immersive with speakers on either side of your head. 

There are more features still that you’d expect to find in your everyday gaming chair. I’ll talk more about adjustments in the next section, but you’ll want tilt, flexible arms, height adjustments, and maybe some rocking as well.

I’ll also touch on ergonomics a little later, but you’ll expect those to be there.

Yes, that’s right, ergonomics! Most streamers are at an age where they don’t have to think twice about stiff shoulders or lower back pain, but you’ll remember the point I made earlier in this article.

Today’s gaming chairs blur the line between them and office chairs. You can use a gaming chair in the office as well as at home for gaming. Thus, they need ergonomics. 

When your gaming chair has a wealth of features, and those features are of exceptional quality, then your chair costs more. 

Adjustability Options

Okay, so let’s talk about adjustments, shall we?

Gaming chairs are usually more adjustable than office chairs to offer users a higher degree of flexibility, but that very much depends on which office and gaming chair you’re comparing. 

You will expect to be able to adjust the height of your chair. Some gaming chairs like the Secretlab Titan Evo 2022 Series are available in several sizes so that when you adjust the height of your chair, it feels more commensurate to your size.

The hydraulics that usually allow for height adjustments will be quiet and well-functioning. 

Your chair should be able to tilt or recline. Whether you get more than 130 degrees of recline all comes down to the gaming chair model you select.

Higher-end, costlier chairs usually offer a more expansive range of recline. You’ll be able to lay nearly all the way back so you can easily get into relaxation mode before your stream or immediately after.

You can also tilt yourself moderately upright or even bolt-upright if you want to sit straight and concentrate (or get some work done).

Then there are the armrests. These days, 4D arms are a standard in gaming chairs. You need the ultimate in arm flexibility so that no matter how you like to sit and play, the armrests won’t get in your way.

A set of 4D arms can move up, down, in, and out, and they typically pivot as well.

Just because 4D arms are the standard in office chairs doesn’t mean that all arms are created equal though. 

The shape of the armrests (convex versus concave), as well as the armrest padding, play a major role in how comfortable the arms will feel, as does how narrow the chair is.

If the armrests hem you in, then no matter how you adjust them, you’ll always feel trapped. 

Comfort

The next factor that can influence the cost of a gaming chair is how comfortable it is.

I already touched on the difference between cheap chair foam that loses its shape after a month versus high-density foam that stays firm yet comfortable every time you sit for years at a time. 

That’s far from all that goes into how comfortable a gaming chair is though. The shape of the seat is also important, which is why newer gaming chairs have wider seats with flared edges to support the thighs and promote good blood flow.

Features like even pressure distribution, good weight distribution, cooling gel or foam, and adjustments all go into how comfortable a chair is.

Of course, you know I’m going to talk about ergonomics. It used to be that office chairs had the best ergonomics around to support workers putting in long hours at the office.

When most people think of gaming chair ergonomics, their minds automatically jump to the head and lumbar support pillows that are attached via big elastic straps to the chair.

Before I delve too deep into this section, I want to make clear that not all gaming chairs necessarily feature ergonomics that will make a difference in your daily back pain. 

You’ll see the kinds of chairs I’m talking about in the next section, but for now, know that you have to be willing to spend at least a couple hundred dollars to get high-quality ergonomics. Lower-quality, cheaper chairs need not apply.

Part of the AD+ design featured in the Jungle Series gaming chair is a high degree of recline known as AD+ Recline. You can pull the chair back up to 160 degrees and then sit up straight in the chair at 90 degrees.  

AD+ Recline features recline angle lock as well as a multi-tilt mechanism for setting the chair’s suspension. Between these two features, sitting in the Jungle Series chair should feel effortless. 

The AD+ molded pillows feature temperature and pressure sensitivity so they stay cool and comfortable to use all day. Plus, the pillow molds to your body so it has a customized fit every time.

The AndaSeat Jungle Series premium gaming chair starts at $350. 

Noblechairs Hero

The Noblechairs Hero is another gaming chair that could be good for your back. 

The lumbar support featured in this Noblechairs gaming chair is better than in past models, as the manufacturer upgraded what was included “due to overwhelming popular demand.”

Now the lumbar support is built right into the Hero’s backrest in a feature that Noblechairs likens to that which you can find in today’s highest-end automobiles. 

To adjust the degree of lumbar support, you can use an included rotary dial mounted to the side of the chair. 

Customizing your degree of back support is a feature that many gaming chairs manufacturers are prioritizing since everyone’s needs and pain levels are different.

The Hero also features a very sizable backrest and seat. If you’ve tried other chairs by Noblechairs, the Hero is their biggest yet as of this writing.

To bolster your comfort, you can select from two sizes, large and XL. Size large is for users between 4’11” and 6’2” who weigh less than 260 pounds and size XL is for users who are between 5’11” and 6’9” who weigh up to 395 pounds.

A four-way adaptive lumbar support system clearly takes a page out of Secretlab’s book, but hey, there’s nothing wrong with that if there’s another ergonomically driven gaming chair on the market.

The internal lumbar support is adjustable with a side knob and can move up, down, in, and out. You’ll also find another side knob for setting the lower back pressure and firmness. 

With reactive rocking, you get a more comfortable sitting experience in the Kaiser 3. The chair also boasts 165 degrees of recline (that you can also set to approximately 90 degrees for perfect posture) via the full-mechanism backrest.

A magnetic head pillow clips into position and never shifts. The pillow also features cooling technology for preventing noggin warmth. 

The flatter, wider seat design of the Kaiser 3 provides more space but doesn’t have any sort of postural features. Inside the seat is AndaSeat’s own Re-Dense molded foam, which is resilient, strong, and plenty dense. 

Don’t forget the fully flexible 4D armrests as well! They too are another feature for keeping you comfy in your gaming chair as you work or play for hours.

Secretlab Omega 2020 Series Gaming Chair 

Speaking of Secretlab, let’s next examine an older but still equally beloved gaming chair, the Secretlab Omega 2020 Series.

This Secretlab classics chair may not be quite as sophisticated as the 2022 Titan Evo but still has some great features in its own right.

For example, the Omega has a lumbar support knob near the backrest for adjusting your lumbar support on either side of your back. 

This personalized, customized degree of support lets you favor your left side or right side more depending on whatever’s hurting more that day!

The full metal 4D armrests–later a reworked staple of the Titan–started with the older Secretlab chairs like the Omega. 

The internal mechanism in the arms allows for smooth and effortless adjustments up, down, backward, forward, right, left, and at right or left angles.

The same Secretlab Signature Memory Foam Pillow that appeared in the new and improved Titan was part of the 2020 series of chairs, and worry not, as the cooling gel is there as well. 

A tall, full-length backrest plus great recline capability (up to 165 degrees) in the Omega reduce strain according to Secretlab. 

Plus, the Omega features the intuitive multi-tilt mechanism, which Secretlab says “adapts effortlessly to you, whether you’re sitting straight and leaning back.” 

The Secretlab Omega 2020 Series gaming chair costs $550. 

Mavix M9

The Mavix M9 is likely named after its nine impressive ergonomics features. 

What are those ergonomic features? From the top down, the M9 offers:

• Adjustable neck and head support
• Adjustable back height
• Recline lock in any position you wish
• Dynamic Variable Lumbar Support (DVL)
• Cooling seat
• Seat depth adjustment
• Seat width
• Tension recline adjustment
• Locking enabled wheels

Whew! That sure was a lot. Even if you have significant back pain, in a chair like the M9, you might notice that your days are less uncomfortable. 

I do want to take a moment to talk a little further about the DVL support. Mavix says its M9 chair includes Advanced Tensile Recovery or ATR fabric, which is a multilayered woven nylon that supports the user and is designed to be ultra-responsive. 

The Mavix M9 is more expensive than the other chairs I’ve discussed so far and costs over $1,000. 

Corsair T3 Rush Gaming Chair

The Corsair T3 Rush has made quite a name for itself, so it rightfully deserves a spot on this list. 

Supporting both your back and neck, the T3 Rush offers memory foam throughout the back and a neck cushion with luxe padding. 

Lumbar support puts your comfort at the forefront while adjustments galore (everything from flexible armrests to recline) allow you to customize your sitting experience to the fullest. 

The 4D arms swivel as well as move to the front and back, left and right, and up and down. You can keep the arms under your own or move them out of the way. 

The degree of recline available in the T3 Rush is up to 170 degrees. You can also sit up with the recline angle set to 90 degrees. 

The tilt mechanism lets you control the recline as well as the tilt and the height of the chair.

The Corsair T3 Rush is available for $320. 

DXRacer Craft Custom Gaming Chair 

I know, I know, DXRacer doesn’t exactly have the best reputation when it comes to gaming chair quality, but some of its chairs stand head and shoulders above the rest. The Craft custom chair is one of them.

The Craft chair has more of the features you’d expect out of a Secretlab or AndaSeat gaming chair, such as integrated lumbar support in the backrest. 

The rotary dial, which is side-mounted, is rotatable so you can increase or decrease the degree of spinal support depending on how you’re sitting and what you’re doing. 

An included head pillow in the Craft is packed full of plush memory foam that will mold to your shape but bounce back when you’re done using it. The head pillow also has a layer of cooling gel. 

The DXRacer Craft custom gaming chair costs $480. 

Herman Miller Embody Gaming Chair

The Herman Miller Embody is one of the most famous office chairs in history. Now it’s available as a gaming chair.

The biggest names in ergonomics, vision, physical therapy, and biomechanics put their heads together to create the amazing original Embody. That same expertise extends to this gaming-friendly edition of the Embody. 

Herman Miller also worked with Logitech to determine what gamers are looking for in a chair. 

The result is a gaming chair with an enhanced seat built with extra foam padding than the original Embody. 

Within the chair is cooling foam infused with copper that keeps you cool when you’re fighting it out against the final boss. 

The arms aren’t 4D, but that’s standard for Herman Miller. You can adjust the Embody gaming chair’s arm width and height, which is better than stationary arms!

The Embody has better pressure distribution than past models to keep your blood flowing healthily and your balance optimal. 

Best of all, included with the Embody gaming chair is the awesome BackFit adjustment system, a refined lumbar support system that allows you to customize your degree of back support via adjustable knobs.

Razer Enki Gaming Chair

Revolutionize your back comfort with the Razer Enki. This gaming chair offers a sizable seat base and extended shoulder arches at 110 degrees, so it’s certainly a seat that commands attention!

The included lumbar arch extends across your lower back and promotes a more neutral sitting position that’s a lot better for your posture. 

Razer also says the Enki’s ergonomics are designed to reduce your fatigue if you use the chair for a while.

To make the Enki, Razer optimized the density of the cushion, making it firmer and plusher where it counts. 

You can also tilt this chair back 152 degrees with two tilting options. You can either lean back and you’ll tilt via weight-adjusted tilting, or you can use the mechanism.

Although it’s not magnetic, the memory foam head cushion doesn’t have overly noticeable straps, so it’s an enhancing feature rather than a distracting one. 

The Razer Enki costs $400.  

RESPAWN Specter Gaming Chair

At the end of the list now, the RESPAWN Specter is incredibly innovative for a gaming chair.

It’s a full mesh chair, the first of the seats I’ve discussed on this list with an exclusive mesh upholstery option. 

The contoured lumbar support is built into the backrest. To further augment your comfort, you can adjust the seat slide depth and the height of the headrest. 

The armrests are adjustable as well, but they’re 3D, not 4D. 

With Synchro-Tilt, the edges of the chair are closer to the ground. RESPAWN says this improves spinal alignment and leg circulation. 

The RESPAWN Specter starts at $320.

Gaming chairs can be incredibly good for your back due to the range of ergonomic features available.

These Are the Features That Make Gaming Chairs a Great Choice for Studying

Now, as I talked about in my post on whether gaming chairs are good for office work (spoiler alert, they are), I must present the caveat here that not every gaming chair is going to be suitable for studying.

If you buy a cheap $75 gaming chair, which is likely to happen on a college kid’s budget, then you’re no better off than sitting on the wooden or metal chairs at your campus library. You’re not going to be very comfortable either way.

The gaming chairs I’m talking about throughout this section are usually a little more expensive, somewhere in the ballpark of $300 to $600. While these chairs are an investment, the unmatched quality is what makes them so sought-after for studying, as you’re about to see.

Ergonomics

When it comes to ergonomics, it used to be that office chairs had the lion’s share of features. A gaming chair had those plush head and lower back pillows strapped to the chair with thick elastic.

Office chairs like Herman Miller innovated by equipping chairs with a lattice of flexible hinges akin to a spine within the chair.

Well, it’s been one giant leap for gaming chairs since those kinds of ergonomic innovations were on the table. Today, you’re likely to see gaming chairs that have that same kind of secondary spine hidden in the seams of the chair.

Your spine is supported from your neck to your lower back. You can move overtly or subtly in your chair–both of which are likely when studying–and still enjoy spinal support.

If not a secondary spine in your gaming chair, then you’re likely to see sophisticated lower back pads. 

You can often individually adjust the tension and pressure on both pads so that if one side of your back gets achier than the other, you can ramp up the support.

Even though the crowd that’s still into studying skews younger and thus isn’t concerned about ergonomics, it’s never too early to take your health into account.

How you sit and the type of chair you sit in can cause pain and stiffness at any age. That will disrupt your studying session in a jiffy. 

You’ll have to get up, stretch, walk around, and come back, losing time in your studying session.
